Will Dilma Rousseff rise to the challenge of running Brazil?
On January 1st Dilma Rousseff was sworn in as Brazil's first female president. She takes over a booming economy, but also rising inflation and interest rates, creaky infrastructure and a legislature given to splurging. The currency is overvalued and consumer credit has been bulging dangerously. She will also have to face up to the tasks Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, her impressive predecessor, left undone. These include reforming Brazil’s anachronistic labour code remains an anachronism; slashing payroll taxes; reining in obstructionist and unsackable bureauocrats; and clamping down on rampant political corruption. On top of that, Rio de Janeiro will host South America's first Olympic games in 2016. Plenty still needs to be done to ensure they do not end in embarrassment.
